If you're on Instagram, you have probably seen color swatching on the forearm or you've probably even been told the test the foundation on othe inner portion of your wrist (this is old school).  Here's the thing, the color or tone of your skin is more than likely not the same shade from your face to your body.  So here are some steps that may make selecting a foundation shade a little easier:

1.  Find a few (3 - 4) shades that may work for you

2.  Swatch on your jawline (from your cheek to your neck) either using your finger or a q-tip

3.  Let it sit for a few minutes and see how it adjusts to your skin (since foundation can sometimes oxidize and darken)

4.  Select the color that disappears into the skin or that you can barely see.  An odd hue, ashy color, or dark color is the incorrect color choice.

5.  Finally, swatch the forehead to determine if you may need more than one foundation shade

**Remember that pigmentation can vary on the face, especially in browner skin tones (where you can sometimes see up for 4 shades).  Never match the darkest area or the lightest area of the face.  Ideally, you should stay in the middle value of these areas to look the most vibrant.
